Prepared Base Briefing Power

The UK’s resilience to severe space weather

The National Audit Office reviewed UK preparedness for severe space weather, which can disrupt satellites, navigation, aviation and parts of the electricity system. It found gaps in responsibilities, planning and testing, and noted that severe events can have wide cross-sector consequences.

Why this matters

Prepared Base view: Space weather sounds niche, but its effects can be very ordinary: power disruption, loss of navigation and problems with communications. It is another argument for simple backups that work without the internet or mains electricity.

What you can do

Keep offline contact details and directions, have battery lighting and a radio, download or keep paper maps for important journeys, and avoid relying on a single digital navigation or communication method.
